Many first responders work rotating shifts, which can make maintaining a normal life difficult. Not only do these men and women work alternating shifts, but they also work weekends and holidays too. Prepare Before Your Shift

Whether you have to be to work at 5 am or midnight, you probably don’t want to do all your prep work right before your shift. Instead, get your uniform, food, and anything else you need ready before your shift starts. Always keep these items in the same spot, so you won’t have to look for it when it’s time to go.

Show Up on Time

Shift work isn’t your average 9 to 5, which means you can’t simply clock out when your shift is over. First responders need to wait until their replacement is there to leave. To make the workplace a happier place, make sure to show up on time. If you continually show up on time, chances are your co-workers will too.

Take Care of Your Health

Believe it or not, working rotating shifts can affect your health. Your body has an internal clock and when you don’t sleep or eat when your body thinks you should, it can cause health issues. To avoid throwing your body into havoc, follow the tips below.

  • Practice good posture
  • Don’t sit for the entire shift
  • Get fresh air whenever possible
  • Eat healthy
  • Avoid energy drinks and fake sugar

Good Sleeping Rituals

Your body needs sleep to function. Without proper sleep, you can’t function at home or work. To survive your rotating shifts, you need to establish a good sleeping ritual. Make sure your bedroom is cold and dark. If there are other people in the house, or you live in a busy neighborhood, you may also want to invest in a sleeping mask and comfortable ear plugs.

Establish a Routine

When you are getting used to rotating shifts, you need to establish a routine that will program your body for its new schedule. To do this, you need to eat and sleep on the days you work. Don’t worry about anything else. On your actual days off, you can run errands, go out with friends and catch up on household chores. As your body gets use to the new schedule, you may be able to add new activities on the days you work, but don’t rush it.
